How Do We Add Four or More Digits?

First comes the ones place, then comes the tens place…
Next is the hundreds, followed by thousands too!
Line up your numbers nice and straight,
Start from the right—it’s never too late!

Here’s what we do:

1. Write down the numbers so their places align (ones under ones, tens under tens).
2. Start adding from the ones place.
3. If the sum in any column is 10 or more, carry over the extra to the next column.
4. Keep going until all columns are done. Ta-da!

Let’s Try an Example Together!

We want to solve this addition sentence:
2,456 + 3,789 = ?

Step 1: Line them up neatly.
     2,456
+ 3,789
————

Step 2: Add starting from the ones place.
- Ones: 6 + 9 = 15 → Write “5” and carry over “1”.
- Tens: 5 + 8 + 1 (carry) = 14 → Write “4” and carry over “1”.
- Hundreds: 4 + 7 + 1 (carry) = 12 → Write “2” and carry over “1”.
- Thousands: 2 + 3 + 1 (carry) = 6.

The answer is 6,245! Great job!
