First, let’s find a common denominator. Four and eight both fit into eight nicely. So now:

• - 1/4 becomes 2/8 (because 1 × 2 = 2 and 4 × 2 = 8).
• - 3/8 stays 3/8.

Now that their denominators match, just compare the numerators: 2 is less than 3, so 1/4 is smaller than 3/8. Yay!
