đ Let's Estimate Sums Together! đ
Estimating sums means finding a close answer without doing all the math. Itâs like
guessing how many cookies are in a jarâyou donât need to count every single one, just take a good guess!
How Do We Estimate Sums?
First comes rounding, then comes adding⌠Hereâs how it works:
Round each number: Look at the ones place and decide if itâs closer to the next
ten or stays where it is. For example, 27 rounds to 30, and
42 rounds to 40.
Add your rounded numbers: Now that you have simpler numbers, add them together.
Adding is fun when itâs easier!
Celebrate your estimate: Ta-da! Youâve got an answer thatâs close
enough to help you solve big problems quickly.
Letâs Try One Together!
Whatâs 58 + 24?
Step 1: Round both numbers. 58 becomes 60, and 24 becomes 20.
Step 2: Add the rounded numbers. 60 + 20 = 80.
So, our estimate is 80. That was easy, wasnât it?
Tips for Superhero Parents đڏââď¸đڏââď¸
Make it playful! Use toys, snacks, or coins to practice rounding and adding.
Repeat key ideas often: âRounding makes numbers simpler,â and âEstimates are close answers.â
Encourage guessing before solving. Ask, âWhat do YOU think the answer might be?â
Celebrate effort, not perfection. Every try brings them closer to being a math wizard!
