Discover how fun learning can be with games and surprises!
Shapes have sides and angles that help us tell them apart! Counting sides and angles is like counting cookies in a jar—one by one until you know how many there are!
Sides are the straight lines on a shape. First, find where the line starts, then follow it all the way around. For example, a triangle has 3 sides, just like a tricycle has 3 wheels!
Angles are the pointy corners where two sides meet. Look at the corner of your book—it makes an angle! A square has 4 angles, just like your favorite pizza slice has one big yummy angle.
To compare shapes, count their sides and angles. If one shape has more, say “That’s the winner!” For example, a rectangle has 4 sides and a pentagon has 5—so the pentagon wins this round!
Look at these two shapes:
Who has more? That’s right—the hexagon does! It’s like having 6 candies instead of 3. Sweet victory for the hexagon!
- Use everyday objects like plates (circles), books (rectangles), or toy blocks (squares) to show
examples.
- Sing songs about counting: “First comes 1, then comes 2, now we’re counting every side we
view!”
- Draw shapes together and let kids trace the sides while counting aloud.
