How Does Subtraction Work?

First comes the big number, then comes the small. Take it away, and see what’s left in all!

1. Start with the total: That’s your starting point, nice and whole.
2. Find the part to take away: This is the piece you’ll subtract today.
3. Count backward or use fingers: Subtracting makes numbers smaller—zingers!
4. Check your answer: Did you get it right? Give yourself a high-five delight!

Let’s Try an Example!

We have this problem: 456 - 123 = ?

Step 1: Start with the hundreds place. 400 - 100 = 300.

Step 2: Move to the tens place. 50 - 20 = 30.

Step 3: Finish with the ones place. 6 - 3 = 3.

Put it together: 456 - 123 = 333. Yay, we did it!
