Discover how fun learning can be with games and surprises!
Fractions are parts of a whole, and we can show them on a number line! Imagine the number line is like a candy bar split into equal pieces—each piece is a fraction of the whole bar!
First, draw your number line. Start at 0 and end at 1. It’s like building a bridge from start to finish!
Next, decide how many equal parts you want. If it’s halves, divide the line into 2 equal parts. If it’s thirds, divide it into 3 equal parts. Equal means fair—no part should be bigger or smaller!
Then, label each part with its fraction. The first part is 1/2, the second is 2/2 (which is the same as 1). Or for thirds, it’s 1/3, 2/3, and 3/3 (which is also 1).
Finally, place a dot where the fraction belongs. For example, if you’re graphing 1/3, put a dot right at the first section of the line. Easy peasy lemon squeezy!
We’ll graph 2/4 on a number line. First, draw a line from 0 to 1. Now, divide it into 4 equal parts because the denominator is 4. Label them 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4. Place a big dot at 2/4. Ta-da! You’ve just graphed a fraction!
1. Use everyday objects like rulers, paper strips, or even snacks to make number lines fun.
2. Sing songs while counting fractions: “One-fourth, two-fourths, three-fourths, four!”
3. Encourage kids to explain back to you. Teaching helps them learn better!
4. Celebrate small wins. A high-five or sticker goes a long way!
