Decimals are numbers that tell us about parts of a whole! Think of them like slices of pizzaâif one slice is bigger than another, we can compare them to see which is yummier (or larger).
First comes the number line, then come the decimals... Letâs go step by step:
1ď¸âŁ Draw your number line. Start with two points, like 0 and 1. Itâs like drawing train tracks for our decimals to hop on!
2ď¸âŁ Divide it into equal pieces. If youâre working with tenths, divide the space between 0 and 1 into 10 little jumps. Each jump is worth 0.1âthatâs tiny but mighty!
3ď¸âŁ Place the decimals on the line. Now, letâs put those decimal friends where they belong. For example, 0.3 will be three hops from 0, and 0.7 will be seven hops away. See how far apart they are?
4ď¸âŁ Compare using the line. The farther right a decimal is, the bigger it is. So if 0.7 is to the right of 0.3, guess what? 0.7 is the winnerâitâs larger!
We have two decimals: 0.4 and 0.6. Where do they live on the number line?
- First, draw your number line from 0 to 1.
- Divide it into 10 equal parts. Each part is 0.1 big!
- Place 0.4 four hops from 0 and 0.6 six hops from 0.
- Look closely: Which one is farther to the right? Thatâs rightâ0.6 is bigger!
Teaching kids about decimals doesnât have to be scary! Hereâs how you can help:
⨠Use real-life examples: Talk about money (like $0.50 vs. $0.75) or measuring cups (½ cup vs. Ÿ
cup).
⨠Make it hands-on: Draw number lines together with crayons or use sticky notes to place decimals.
⨠Play games: Create a âdecimal scavenger huntâ around the house. Who can find something labeled 0.99
first?
⨠Celebrate small wins: Every time they get it right, cheer loudly! Positive reinforcement makes
learning fun.
