Decimals are numbers that show parts of a whole.
Think of decimals like slices of pizza—when you split one big pizza into smaller pieces, each slice is a part of the whole pie! 🍕
First comes the dot, called the decimal point. The decimal point says, “Hey! Numbers after me are tiny pieces!”
To the left of the dot, we count whole things. To the right, we count little bits.
It goes like this:
Ones → Tenths → Hundredths → Thousandths.
Bigger to smaller, step by step!
Look at the number 5.27:
So, 5.27 is like saying, “I have five full apples and two big bites plus seven tiny nibbles from another apple.” 🍏
1. Use real-life examples: Talk about money ($1.50) or measurements (3.75 feet).
2. Sing it out: “Ones, then dot, then tenths, then more!” Repeat together.
3. Play games: Draw pizzas or cakes and divide them into slices to practice decimals.
4. Celebrate small wins: Every time your kiddo gets it, cheer like they just hit a home run! 🎉
