What is Regrouping in Addition?
Sometimes when we add numbers, the ones add up to 10 or more!
When this happens, we "regroup" by making a group of 10 ones into 1 ten. It's like when you have 10 pennies and trade them for 1 dime!
How to Add With Regrouping
1️⃣ Add the ones place first
2️⃣ If the ones add to 10 or more, regroup 10 ones as 1 ten
3️⃣ Add the tens place (don't forget the regrouped ten!)
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: 27 + 5
1. Add the ones: 7 + 5 = 12 (that's 10 + 2)
2. Regroup: Write 2 in the ones place and carry 1 to the tens place
2 7
+ 5
3 2
3. Add the tens: 2 (original) + 1 (carried) = 3
🎉 Final answer: 32
Example 2: 48 + 6
1. Add the ones: 8 + 6 = 14 (that's 10 + 4)
2. Regroup: Write 4 in the ones place and carry 1 to the tens place
4 8
+ 6
5 4
3. Add the tens: 4 (original) + 1 (carried) = 5
🎉 Final answer: 54
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use physical objects: Have your child count out 10 small items (like buttons or coins) and physically group them together to show regrouping in action.
- Make it a game: Create flashcards with regrouping problems and see how many your child can solve correctly in one minute.
- Relate to real life: When shopping, ask questions like "If you have 38 cents and find 7 more, how much do you have now?" to practice regrouping in everyday situations.
