Adding Fractions with Like Denominators

Learn how to combine three or more fractions that share the same denominator!

What Are Like Denominators?

Fractions with like denominators have the same bottom number!
When fractions share the same denominator, adding them is as easy as counting pizza slices. Just add the numerators (top numbers) and keep the denominator the same!

How to Add Fractions with Like Denominators

1️⃣ Identify that all denominators are the same

2️⃣ Add the numerators together

3️⃣ Keep the denominator unchanged

Let's Practice Together!

Example 1: Pizza Party!

At your pizza party, you ate \(\frac{2}{8}\) of a pizza, your friend ate \(\frac{3}{8}\), and another friend ate \(\frac{1}{8}\). How much pizza was eaten in total?

Click to solve: \(\frac{2}{8} + \frac{3}{8} + \frac{1}{8} = ?\)
\(\frac{2 + 3 + 1}{8} = \frac{6}{8}\) which simplifies to \(\frac{3}{4}\) of the pizza!

Example 2: Cookie Jar

You took \(\frac{1}{5}\) of cookies from the jar, your sister took \(\frac{2}{5}\), and your brother took \(\frac{1}{5}\). What fraction of cookies was taken?

Click to solve: \(\frac{1}{5} + \frac{2}{5} + \frac{1}{5} = ?\)
\(\frac{1 + 2 + 1}{5} = \frac{4}{5}\) of the cookies were taken!

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Use real objects: Cut fruits or pizzas into equal parts to visually demonstrate adding fractions with the same denominator.
  • Make it a game: Create fraction cards and have your child race to add three or more fractions with like denominators.
  • Connect to daily life: Point out fractions in recipes or when dividing treats to show practical applications.
