Adding 3 or More Fractions with Unlike Denominators

Learn to combine fractions with different bottom numbers!

What Does It Mean to Add Fractions?

Fractions represent parts of a whole.
When we add fractions with different denominators (the bottom numbers), we need to find a common language for them first - just like translating different languages so everyone can understand!

How to Add Fractions with Unlike Denominators

1️⃣ Find a common denominator - the smallest number all denominators can divide into

2️⃣ Convert each fraction to have this common denominator

3️⃣ Add the numerators (top numbers) and keep the denominator

4️⃣ Simplify your answer if possible

Let's Practice Together!

Example 1: Pizza Party Fractions

You have three pizza slices: \(\frac{1}{4}\) pepperoni, \(\frac{1}{3}\) cheese, and \(\frac{1}{6}\) veggie. How much pizza do you have total?

¼

Step 1: Find the Least Common Denominator (LCD) of 4, 3, and 6. LCD = 12

Step 2: Convert each fraction: \(\frac{1}{4} = \frac{3}{12}\), \(\frac{1}{3} = \frac{4}{12}\), \(\frac{1}{6} = \frac{2}{12}\)

Step 3: Add them: \(\frac{3}{12} + \frac{4}{12} + \frac{2}{12} = \frac{9}{12}\)

Step 4: Simplify: \(\frac{9}{12} = \frac{3}{4}\)

🎉 Answer: You have \(\frac{3}{4}\) of a pizza!

Example 2: Baking Recipe Fractions

A recipe calls for \(\frac{1}{2}\) cup flour, \(\frac{1}{8}\) cup sugar, and \(\frac{3}{4}\) cup milk. What's the total liquid/dry mix?

½ ¾

Step 1: LCD of 2, 8, and 4 is 8

Step 2: Convert each fraction: \(\frac{1}{2} = \frac{4}{8}\), \(\frac{1}{8} = \frac{1}{8}\), \(\frac{3}{4} = \frac{6}{8}\)

Step 3: Add them: \(\frac{4}{8} + \frac{1}{8} + \frac{6}{8} = \frac{11}{8}\)

Step 4: Convert to mixed number: \(\frac{11}{8} = 1\frac{3}{8}\)

🎉 Answer: Total of \(1\frac{3}{8}\) cups!

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Use real-life examples: Cooking measurements, pizza slices, or dividing candy bars make great fraction practice.
  • Visual aids help: Draw circles or rectangles divided into parts to show how fractions combine.
  • Practice LCD separately: Before adding fractions, practice finding the Least Common Denominator with number games.
