Divide 2-digit and 3-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers

Master division with larger numbers through fun practice!

Understanding Division with Larger Numbers

Division gets more exciting when working with bigger numbers!
When dividing 2-digit or 3-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers, we use the same long division steps you've learned, but now we'll practice with more challenging numbers. Remember: estimate, multiply, subtract, and bring down!

Long Division Steps

1️⃣ Divide: Estimate how many times the divisor fits into the dividend

2️⃣ Multiply: Multiply the divisor by your estimate

3️⃣ Subtract: Subtract this from your current dividend

4️⃣ Bring down: Bring down the next digit (if any remain)

5️⃣ Repeat until you've solved the whole problem!

Practice Examples

Example 1: 84 ÷ 12

Let's solve this step by step:

\( 12 \overline{\smash{)}84} \)
How many times does 12 go into 84?

Did you know? 12 × 7 = 84, so the answer is exactly 7 with no remainder!

Example 2: 156 ÷ 13

Try solving this 3-digit division:

\( 13 \overline{\smash{)}156} \)
Step 1: 13 goes into 15 time(s)
13 × =
Subtract: 15 - =
Bring down the 6 to make
Now, 13 goes into exactly time(s)

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Real-world practice: Have your child divide quantities in daily life - like sharing 96 candies among 24 friends, or dividing 150 pages to read over 15 days.
  • Estimation first: Encourage estimating before calculating ("About how many 25s are in 100?") to build number sense.
  • Celebrate mistakes: Wrong answers are learning opportunities! Analyze errors together to understand where the thinking went astray.
