Understanding Different Number Forms
Numbers can appear in different costumes!
Sometimes numbers dress up as fractions (½), sometimes as decimals (0.5), and sometimes as mixed numbers (1½).
To compare them properly, we need to see them all in the same form - usually as decimals makes it easiest!
How to Order Mixed Number Types
1️⃣ Convert everything to decimals (divide numerator by denominator for fractions)
2️⃣ Line them up by decimal points to compare place values
3️⃣ Order them from smallest to largest (or vice versa)
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Drag to Order
Put these numbers in order from smallest to largest:
0.75
½
1¼
⅗
Example 2: Number Line Challenge
Place these numbers on the number line where they belong:
0
0.5
1
1.5
2
1.8
¾
1¼
⅖
Parent Tips 🌟
- Cooking conversions are perfect practice - have your child help double a recipe that uses fractions while you measure with decimals
- Make it a game - write different number forms on index cards and race to put them in order
- Real-world connections help - compare sports statistics (batting averages), prices, or measurements that use different number forms
