Adding with Regrouping

Learn how to add one-digit numbers to two-digit numbers when we need to carry over!

What is Regrouping in Addition?

Sometimes when we add numbers, we need to make a new group of ten!
When we add a one-digit number to a two-digit number and the ones column adds up to 10 or more, we "regroup" by making a new ten. We write down the extra ones and carry the new ten over to the tens column. It's like when you have 10 pennies and exchange them for 1 dime!

How to Add with Regrouping

1️⃣ Add the ones first. If you get 10 or more, make a new ten!

2️⃣ Write down the extra ones and carry the new ten to the tens column.

3️⃣ Add all the tens together, including any you carried over.

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Use physical objects: Have your child use small items like buttons or coins to physically group and regroup when adding. Seeing the process helps understanding.
  • Make it a game: Create flashcards with regrouping problems and turn it into a race against the clock or a points game.
  • Relate to real life: Use examples like "If you have 28 cents and find 7 more, how much do you have?" to show practical applications.
