What Does "Without Regrouping" Mean?
When we add a small number to a bigger number and don't need to carry any extra tens, we call this "adding without regrouping"!
It's like when you have 23 apples and get 4 more. You just count them together and get 27 - no need to make a new group of ten!
How to Add Without Regrouping
1️⃣ Look at the two-digit number first (like 34)
2️⃣ Add the one-digit number to the ones place (like 34 + 5 = add 5 to 4)
3️⃣ Keep the tens digit the same (3 stays 3, and 4+5=9 makes 39)
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Fruit Counting
There are 32 apples in a basket. You add 6 more apples. How many apples are there now?
Example 2: School Supplies
Tim has 45 pencils. His friend gives him 3 more. How many pencils does Tim have now?
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use physical objects like blocks or buttons to show how adding small amounts doesn't change the tens group
- Practice with number lines to help visualize the addition process
- Make it a game - have your child solve problems to "unlock" small rewards or progress in a story
