What Are Addition Word Problems?
Word problems are math stories that ask us to find the answer!
When we read a word problem, we look for the numbers and what's happening to them. If things are being added together, we write an addition sentence to solve it.
How to Write an Addition Sentence
1️⃣ Find the numbers in the story
2️⃣ Look for adding words like "total," "together," or "more"
3️⃣ Write the equation with a plus (+) sign and equals (=) sign
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: The Apple Story
Timmy has 3 red apples and 2 green apples. How many apples does he have altogether?
We see two numbers: 3 and 2
The word "altogether" tells us to add them together
The addition sentence is: 3 + 2 = 5
Timmy has 5 apples!
Example 2: The Toy Cars
Sarah has 4 toy cars. Her brother gives her 3 more. How many toy cars does Sarah have now?
We see two numbers: 4 and 3
The word "more" tells us to add them together
The addition sentence is: 4 + 3 = 7
Sarah has 7 toy cars now!
