What Are Comparison Word Problems?
Comparison helps us understand how things are different or the same!
When we compare, we look at two or more things to see which has more, which has less, or if they're equal. Word problems tell us stories with numbers we can compare!
How to Solve Comparison Problems
1️⃣ Listen or read carefully to understand the story
2️⃣ Find the numbers you need to compare
3️⃣ Use comparison words like "more than" or "fewer than"
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Fruit Basket
Emma has 5 apples. Liam has 3 apples. Who has more apples?
Emma has more apples because 5 is greater than 3!
We can say: Emma has 2 more apples than Liam.
Example 2: Pet Show
There are 7 dogs at the pet show and 4 cats. How many fewer cats are there than dogs?
There are 3 fewer cats than dogs because 7 - 4 = 3!
We can also say there are 3 more dogs than cats.
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use everyday objects: Compare snacks, toys, or steps taken to make it real ("You have 2 more crackers than your sister").
- Act it out: Have your child use their fingers or small toys to represent the numbers in the problem.
- Emphasize the words: Highlight comparison words like "more," "less," "fewer," and "same" when reading together.
