Simple Fractions

Learning about parts of a whole with yummy examples!

What Are Fractions?

Fractions are parts of a whole!
When we divide something into equal parts, each part is a fraction. Fractions help us share things fairly, like pizza, cakes, or even time!

Understanding Simple Fractions

1️⃣ The top number (numerator) tells how many parts we have

2️⃣ The bottom number (denominator) tells how many equal parts the whole is divided into

3️⃣ The line between them means "out of" or "divided by"

  • Make it hands-on: Use paper plates or construction paper to create fraction manipulatives.
  • Fraction scavenger hunt: Look for fractions around the house (half a glass of milk, quarter of an hour, etc.).
