Compare Edges, Vertices, and Faces

Exploring the building blocks of shapes!

What Are Edges, Vertices, and Faces?

Shapes are made of special parts we can count and compare!
Faces are the flat surfaces (like the sides of a box). Edges are where two faces meet (like the lines where you fold a cardboard box). Vertices (or vertices) are the pointy corners where edges come together!

Let's Learn About Shape Parts

1️⃣ Faces are the flat sides (like a cube has 6 square faces)

2️⃣ Edges are the lines where faces meet (a cube has 12 edges)

3️⃣ Vertices are the corner points (a cube has 8 vertices)

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Play shape detective - Look for edges, vertices and faces on everyday objects like cereal boxes, pyramids of blocks, or balls.
  • Build together - Use toothpicks (edges) and marshmallows (vertices) to build 3D shapes and count the parts.
  • Sing about shapes - Make up simple songs like "A cube has 6 faces, 12 edges too, count its 8 vertices, now you know it too!"
