Compare Sides and Vertices

Counting and comparing the edges and corners of shapes!

What Are Sides and Vertices?

Shapes are made of sides (edges) and vertices (corners)!
Every shape has straight or curved edges called sides. Where two sides meet, they form a pointy corner called a vertex (the plural is vertices). Let's learn to count and compare them!

How to Compare Shapes

1️⃣ Look at the shape - Is it round or does it have straight edges?

2️⃣ Count the sides - Trace each edge with your finger

3️⃣ Count the vertices - Point to each corner where sides meet

Let's Practice Together!

Example 1: Shape Showdown

Click on each shape to reveal its sides and vertices. Which shape has more?

Triangle

Square

Pentagon

Example 2: Build-a-Shape

Help complete the shape by counting its sides and vertices!

Sides: 0 | Vertices: 0

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Shape Hunt: Go on a shape hunt around your house and compare how many sides and corners different objects have.
  • Playdough Shapes: Make shapes with playdough and count the sides and vertices as you create them.
  • Drawing Challenge: Ask your child to draw shapes with specific numbers of sides/vertices (e.g., "Draw a shape with 4 sides and 4 vertices").
