What Are Sides and Vertices?
Shapes are made of sides (edges) and vertices (corners)!
Every shape has straight or curved edges called sides. Where two sides meet, they form a pointy corner
called a vertex (the plural is vertices). Let's learn to count and compare them!
How to Compare Shapes
1️⃣ Look at the shape - Is it round or does it have straight edges?
2️⃣ Count the sides - Trace each edge with your finger
3️⃣ Count the vertices - Point to each corner where sides meet
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Shape Showdown
Click on each shape to reveal its sides and vertices. Which shape has more?
Triangle
Square
Pentagon
Example 2: Build-a-Shape
Help complete the shape by counting its sides and vertices!
Sides: 0 | Vertices: 0
Parent Tips 🌟
- Shape Hunt: Go on a shape hunt around your house and compare how many sides and corners different objects have.
- Playdough Shapes: Make shapes with playdough and count the sides and vertices as you create them.
- Drawing Challenge: Ask your child to draw shapes with specific numbers of sides/vertices (e.g., "Draw a shape with 4 sides and 4 vertices").
