Which Sign Makes the Number Sentence True?

Learn to choose the correct sign (=, >, <) to complete number sentences!

Understanding Math Signs

Math sentences need the right sign to be true!
Just like we use words to make sentences, we use special math signs to compare numbers. The equals sign (=) shows that both sides are the same, the greater than sign (>) shows the first number is bigger, and the less than sign (<) shows the first number is smaller.

How to Choose the Right Sign

1️⃣ Count the objects or numbers on each side

2️⃣ Compare which side has more or if they're equal

3️⃣ Choose the sign that makes the sentence true

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Make it hands-on: Use toys or snacks to create real-life comparison problems ("If you have 4 grapes and I have 6, which sign goes between?").
  • Sign stories: Teach that the "greater than" sign is like a hungry alligator that always eats the bigger number!
  • Daily practice: Find opportunities to compare numbers throughout the day - steps taken, books on a shelf, or cookies in a jar.
