Subtracting 1

Taking away just one makes numbers smaller!

What Does Subtracting 1 Mean?

Subtracting 1 is like taking away one thing from a group.
When we subtract 1 from a number, we get the number that comes right before it when we count. It's like stepping backward on the number line!

How to Subtract 1

1️⃣ Start with your number (like 5)

2️⃣ Imagine taking away 1 thing

3️⃣ Find the number that's one less (4!)

Let's Practice Together!

Example 1: Balloon Pop!

You have 5 balloons. POP! One flies away. How many are left?

5 - 1 = 4 balloons left!

Great job! 4 comes right before 5 when we count.

Example 2: Cookie Monster!

There are 8 cookies on the plate. You eat 1 cookie. How many cookies remain?

8 - 1 = 7 cookies left!

Yummy! 7 is one less than 8.

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Use real objects: Have your child physically remove one item (like a toy or block) from a group to see subtraction in action.
  • Count backward: Practice counting down from small numbers (5, 4, 3...) to help understand subtracting one.
  • Make it fun: Use toys, snacks, or drawings to create simple "take away one" stories throughout the day.
