What Does It Mean to Complete a Subtraction Sentence?
Subtraction sentences tell us how much is left when we take away some
items.
Sometimes part of the subtraction sentence is missing, and we need to figure out what number makes the
sentence true. It's like solving a mini math mystery!
How to Find the Missing Number
1️⃣ Look at the numbers you do have in the subtraction sentence
2️⃣ Think: "What number plus the answer equals the first number?"
3️⃣ Try different numbers until the sentence makes sense
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: The Hungry Squirrel
A squirrel had 8 acorns. After eating some, there were 5 acorns left. How many did the squirrel eat?
8 - = 5
Example 2: Balloon Pop
Timmy had 9 balloons. Some popped, and now he has 3 balloons. How many balloons popped?
9 - = 3
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use real objects like toys or snacks to demonstrate subtraction - "If you have 7 cookies and eat 2, how many are left?"
- Make it a game by writing subtraction sentences with chalk outside and having your child jump to the missing number
- Start with smaller numbers (1-10) before moving to larger numbers to build confidence
