Subtract Tens II

Mastering subtraction with tens numbers!

What Does It Mean to Subtract Tens?

Subtracting tens is like taking away groups of ten!
When we subtract tens, we're working with numbers like 10, 20, 30, and so on. It's just like regular subtraction, but easier because we only need to think about the tens place!

How to Subtract Tens

1️⃣ Look at the tens digit in each number

2️⃣ Subtract the second tens digit from the first

3️⃣ Keep the ones digit as 0 (since we're only working with tens!)

Let's Practice Together!

Example 1: Visual Subtraction

Let's subtract 30 from 50 using blocks:

Count the blocks: 5 tens minus 3 tens =

Example 2: Interactive Practice

Solve this problem: 80 - 40 = ?

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Use physical objects like blocks or coins grouped in tens to make the concept concrete
  • Play "subtraction hopscotch" by writing tens numbers (10, 20, etc.) and having your child jump while solving problems
  • Relate subtraction to real-life situations: "If you have 60 cents and spend 30 cents, how much is left?"
