What is Subtraction?
Subtraction means taking away!
When we subtract, we start with a number and take some away. What's left is our answer. Pictures help us
see how subtraction works by showing items being removed.
How to Subtract with Pictures
1️⃣ Count all the pictures first
2️⃣ Cross out or remove the pictures being taken away
3️⃣ Count how many pictures are left
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Hungry Bunny
There are 7 carrots. The bunny eats 3 carrots. How many are left?
7 - 3 = ?
Example 2: Popping Balloons
There are 5 balloons. 2 balloons pop. How many are still floating?
5 - 2 = ?
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use real objects: Start with physical items like toys or snacks to make subtraction tangible before moving to pictures.
- Make it a game: Play "how many are hiding?" by covering some objects with your hand and asking how many are visible.
- Connect to daily life: Point out subtraction moments like "You had 6 grapes and ate 2, now you have 4 left!"
