What Are Subtraction Sentences?
Subtraction is like sharing or giving away!
When we subtract, we're finding out how many are left after we take some away. A subtraction sentence
shows this with numbers and a minus sign (-).
How to Make Subtraction Sentences
1️⃣ Start with the whole amount (like 5 apples)
2️⃣ Take some away (like 2 apples)
3️⃣ See how many are left (5 - 2 = 3 apples)
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Fruit Basket Fun
There are 7 fruits in the basket:
If we take away 3 grapes, how many fruits are left?
7 fruits - 3 grapes = 4 fruits left!
So the subtraction sentence is: 7 - 3 = 4
Example 2: Teddy Bear Party
There are 6 teddy bears at the party:
If 2 bears go home, how many bears stay at the party?
6 bears - 2 bears = 4 bears still at the party!
So the subtraction sentence is: 6 - 2 = 4
Parent Tips 🌟
