Ways to Subtract from a Number - Subtraction Sentences

Learning to take away with fun and easy examples!

What is Subtraction?

Subtraction means taking away objects from a group.
When we subtract, we find out how many are left after some are taken away. We write subtraction problems as number sentences like "5 - 2 = 3".

How to Write Subtraction Sentences

1️⃣ Start with the total number of items

2️⃣ Write the minus sign (-) and how many you're taking away

3️⃣ Write the equals sign (=) and how many are left

Let's Practice Subtraction!

Apple Subtraction

Sarah has 7 apples. She gives 3 apples to her friend. How many apples does Sarah have left?

Can you write the subtraction sentence?

The correct answer is: 7 - 3 = 4

Toy Car Subtraction

There are 9 toy cars on the floor. Tim puts 5 cars in the toy box. How many cars are still on the floor?

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Use everyday objects like toys or snacks to demonstrate subtraction - "If you have 8 crackers and eat 2, how many are left?"
  • Make it a game! Have your child "buy" small items from you using play money and calculate their change.
  • Practice with fingers - hold up fingers for the starting number, then put some down to show subtraction.
