What Are Multiples of 100?
Multiples of 100 are numbers like 100, 200, 300, and so on!
They're like big jumps on the number line - each one is 100 more than the last. When we add them together, we're combining these big jumps to make even bigger numbers!
How to Add Multiples of 100
1️⃣ Look at the hundreds place (the first digit)
2️⃣ Add just those numbers like regular addition
3️⃣ Put two zeros at the end of your answer
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: The Cookie Factory
The cookie factory made 200 chocolate chip cookies and 300 oatmeal cookies. How many cookies did they make altogether?
Think: 2 hundreds + 3 hundreds = 5 hundreds!
200 + 300 = 500 cookies!
Example 2: The Piggy Bank Challenge
Timmy has 400 pennies in his piggy bank. His grandma adds 500 more pennies. How many pennies does Timmy have now?
Think: 4 hundreds + 5 hundreds = 9 hundreds!
400 + 500 = 900 pennies!
That's almost 1000 - wow!
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use physical objects: Count out groups of 100 items (like 100 pennies, 100 cotton balls) to show what these numbers really mean.
- Make it a game: Create a "hundreds hopscotch" where each square represents 100 and have your child jump while adding.
- Real-world connections: Point out multiples of 100 in everyday life - like prices, distances, or quantities at the store.
