What is Regrouping?
Regrouping happens when we have 10 or more in one place value!
When adding two-digit numbers, sometimes the ones place adds up to 10 or more. That's when we "carry
over" to the tens place. It's like when you have 10 pennies and exchange them for 1 dime!
How to Add with Regrouping
1️⃣ Add the ones place first: If the sum is 10 or more, we write down the ones digit and carry the tens digit to the tens column.
2️⃣ Add the tens place: Don't forget to add any numbers you carried over!
3️⃣ Write your final answer: Put together the tens and ones to make your two-digit answer.
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: 27 + 45
+ 45
1️⃣ Add the ones: 7 + 5 = 12 (Write 2, carry 1 to tens)
2️⃣ Add the tens: 2 + 4 = 6, plus the 1 we carried = 7
3️⃣ Final answer: 72
Example 2: 38 + 57
+ 57
Did you get 95? Great job! Here's how:
1️⃣ 8 + 7 = 15 (Write 5, carry 1)
2️⃣ 3 + 5 = 8, plus 1 we carried = 9
3️⃣ Final answer: 95
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use real objects: Have your child group 10 pennies into a dime to visualize regrouping.
- Make it a game: Create addition challenges with small rewards for correct answers.
- Practice with story problems: "If you have 28 stickers and get 35 more, how many do you have?" makes math meaningful.
