Balance Addition Equations - Up to Two Digits

Making both sides equal like a perfect seesaw!

What Does It Mean to Balance Equations?

Balancing equations is like making sure both sides of a seesaw have equal weight!
When we balance addition equations, we make sure the numbers on the left side of the equals sign (=) add up to the same amount as the numbers on the right side. It's all about keeping things fair and equal!

How to Balance Addition Equations

1️⃣ Look at both sides of the equation (left and right of the = sign)

2️⃣ Calculate each side separately to see if they're equal

3️⃣ Find the missing number that makes both sides equal

Let's Practice Balancing!

Example 1: Find the missing number

15 + 12
20 + ?

15 + 12 = 20 + ?

Which number makes both sides equal?

5 7 10

Example 2: Choose the correct equation

18 + ?
25 + 5

Which number balances this equation?

18 + ? = 25 + 5

12 15 30

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Use real objects: Try balancing actual objects like blocks or toys on a homemade scale to demonstrate the concept physically.
  • Think aloud: When solving problems together, verbalize your thought process to model how to approach balancing equations.
  • Make it a game: Create "equation races" where your child competes against the clock (or you!) to solve balanced equations.
