What is an Addition Sentence?
An addition sentence is a math way to show numbers being added together!
It has numbers with a plus (+) sign between them and an equals (=) sign before the answer. For example: 12 + 34 = 46. We call the numbers we're adding "addends" and the answer the "sum".
How to Write an Addition Sentence
1️⃣ Identify the numbers you're adding together
2️⃣ Write the first number, then a plus sign (+), then the second number
3️⃣ Add them up and write the equals sign (=) with the total sum
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Cookie Count
Sam has 15 chocolate chip cookies and 22 oatmeal cookies. How many cookies does he have in total?
Example 2: Toy Cars
Lily has 27 red toy cars and 14 blue toy cars. Write the addition sentence to find the total number of cars.
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use real objects: Have your child count actual items (coins, buttons, toys) to create addition sentences and see math in action.
- Make it a game: Create "addition sentence cards" where your child matches problems with their correct sums.
- Break it down: For larger numbers, encourage adding the tens first (20+10=30), then the ones (7+4=11), then combine (30+11=41).
