Write the Addition Sentence - Up to Two Digits

Learn how to write and solve addition problems with numbers up to 99!

What is an Addition Sentence?

An addition sentence is a math way to show numbers being added together!
It has numbers with a plus (+) sign between them and an equals (=) sign before the answer. For example: 12 + 34 = 46. We call the numbers we're adding "addends" and the answer the "sum".

How to Write an Addition Sentence

1️⃣ Identify the numbers you're adding together

2️⃣ Write the first number, then a plus sign (+), then the second number

3️⃣ Add them up and write the equals sign (=) with the total sum

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Use real objects: Have your child count actual items (coins, buttons, toys) to create addition sentences and see math in action.
  • Make it a game: Create "addition sentence cards" where your child matches problems with their correct sums.
  • Break it down: For larger numbers, encourage adding the tens first (20+10=30), then the ones (7+4=11), then combine (30+11=41).
