Greatest and Least Word Problems

Comparing numbers up to 100 in fun real-life situations!

Understanding Greatest and Least

Hey math explorer!
Today we're going on a number adventure to find which numbers are the biggest (greatest) and smallest (least) in word problems. We'll look at real-life situations with numbers up to 100 and learn how to compare them like a math detective!

How to Solve Greatest & Least Problems

1️⃣ Read carefully: Understand what the problem is asking

2️⃣ Find the numbers: Pick out all the numbers in the problem

3️⃣ Compare them: Decide which is greatest and which is least

Let's Practice Together!

Example 1: The Ice Cream Contest

At the school fair, four friends sold ice cream cones:
- Emma sold 45 cones
- Liam sold 62 cones
- Olivia sold 38 cones
- Noah sold 57 cones
Who sold the most cones? Who sold the fewest cones?

Click on the number that's the greatest:

45 62 38 57

Liam sold the most cones (62)! That's the greatest number. Olivia sold the fewest cones (38) - that's the least number. Great job comparing!

Example 2: The Jumping Competition

In the long jump competition, four students jumped these distances:
- Sophia: 87 cm
- Ethan: 92 cm
- Mia: 78 cm
- Jacob: 85 cm
Which jump was the longest? Which was the shortest?

Arrange the numbers from least to greatest:

87 92 78 85

The longest jump was Ethan's 92 cm (greatest), and the shortest was Mia's 78 cm (least). Correct order: 78, 85, 87, 92. Awesome comparing!

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Make it real: Use everyday situations like comparing prices at the store or heights of family members to practice greatest/least concepts.
  • Number line helper: Draw a number line from 0-100 to help visualize which numbers are greater or lesser.
  • Game time: Play "Top This!" where you take turns saying numbers up to 100, and the next player has to say a greater number.
