What is a Number Line?
A number line is like a long path where numbers live in order!
It helps us see how numbers relate to each other and makes counting, adding, and subtracting much easier. Today we'll explore number lines all the way up to 1,000!
How to Use a Number Line
1️⃣ Find your starting number - Where does your journey begin?
2️⃣ Count the jumps - Each mark represents a number
3️⃣ Look for patterns - Notice how numbers grow by tens and hundreds
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Find the Missing Numbers
Can you help complete this number line from 850 to 860?
The missing numbers are: 851, 853, 855, 857, and 859
Great job if you got them right! 🎉
Example 2: Jumping on the Number Line
If you start at 720 and make 5 jumps of 10, where will you land?
Parent Tips 🌟
- Make it physical: Create a giant number line on your sidewalk with chalk and have your child jump to different numbers.
- Connect to real life: Show how number lines relate to things like thermometer temperatures or distances on road signs.
- Play estimation games: Ask "About where would 950 be on this 0-1000 number line?" to develop number sense.
