Estimate to the Nearest Ten

Learn how to round numbers to the closest ten in a fun and easy way!

What Does "Estimate to the Nearest Ten" Mean?

Estimating to the nearest ten helps us make numbers simpler and easier to work with!
When we estimate to the nearest ten, we're finding which group of ten (like 10, 20, 30, etc.) a number is closest to. It's like finding which ten-number "house" a number lives in!

How to Estimate to the Nearest Ten

1️⃣ Look at the ones digit (the digit on the right)

2️⃣ If it's 5 or more, round UP to the next ten

3️⃣ If it's 4 or less, round DOWN to the same ten

Let's Practice Together!

Example 1: Round 37 to the nearest ten

Let's look at the number line:

30
35
37
40

1. The ones digit in 37 is 7 (more than 5)

2. So we round UP to 40!

37 rounded to the nearest ten is 40!

Example 2: Round 62 to the nearest ten

Let's look at the number line:

60
62
65
70

1. The ones digit in 62 is 2 (less than 5)

2. So we round DOWN to 60!

62 rounded to the nearest ten is 60!
