Understanding Fraction Comparison
Fractions tell us about parts of a whole!
When we compare fractions, we're figuring out which part is bigger or if they're the same size. Imagine
you have two pizzas cut into different slices - which piece would you rather have?
How to Compare Fractions
1️⃣ Look at the denominators (bottom numbers) - are they the same?
2️⃣ If denominators match, compare numerators (top numbers)
3️⃣ If denominators are different, find equivalent fractions
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Pizza Fractions
Which pizza slice is bigger: 1/4 or 1/2?
1/4
?
1/2
Example 2: Candy Bars
Compare these candy bar pieces:
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use real-life examples like pizza slices, candy bars, or pie pieces to make fractions tangible
- Start with fractions that have the same denominator before moving to different denominators
- Play "Fraction War" with cards - each player draws a fraction card and compares to see whose is larger
