Understanding Grams and Kilograms
Weight is how heavy something is!
We use grams (g) for light things and kilograms (kg) for heavier things. Remember: 1 kilogram = 1,000 grams!
A paperclip weighs about 1 gram, while a big bag of sugar weighs 1 kilogram.
How to Choose the Right Unit
1️⃣ Think: Is it light like a feather or heavy like a watermelon?
2️⃣ Guess: Would you need 1,000 of these to make 1 kg? If yes, use grams!
3️⃣ Check: Compare to things you know - a chocolate bar is grams, a pumpkin is kilograms!
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: What would you use to weigh...
A pencil? Would you use grams or kilograms?
Great job! A pencil is light, so we use grams!
Example 2: What about...
Your little brother or sister? Grams or kilograms?
That's right! People are heavy, so we use kilograms!
Parent Tips 🌟
- Kitchen scale fun: Let your child weigh ingredients while cooking - flour in grams, potatoes in kilograms!
- Guess and check: Play "guess the unit" with household items, then check with a scale if possible.
- Real-world connections: Point out weight labels at the grocery store to show grams and kilograms in action.
