Understanding Place Values
Every digit in a number has a special place!
The value of each digit depends on its position in the number. Let's look at a place value chart to understand how this works.
How to Convert Between Place Values
1️⃣ Understand the value: 1 ten = 10 ones, 1 hundred = 10 tens, etc.
2️⃣ Move between places: Moving left makes the value bigger, moving right makes it smaller.
3️⃣ Practice with examples: Try converting numbers to see how they change!
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: How many tens are in 350?
Think: Each hundred has 10 tens, and each ten has... well, 1 ten!
3 hundreds = 30 tens
Plus 5 tens = 35 tens total!
Answer: 35 tens are in 350.
Example 2: Convert 2 thousands + 4 hundreds + 7 tens to ones
Let's break it down step by step:
2 thousands = hundreds
4 hundreds = tens
7 tens = ones
Now add them all together: ? ones
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use real objects: Count coins (pennies = ones, dimes = tens, dollars = hundreds) to make place values tangible.
- Play place value games: Create number cards and have your child "trade" 10 ones for 1 ten, 10 tens for 1 hundred, etc.
- Connect to daily life: When looking at prices or quantities, ask "How many tens are in this number?" to reinforce the concept.
