Place Value Models - Tens and Ones

Understanding how numbers are made of groups of tens and ones!

What Are Tens and Ones?

Numbers are like building blocks!
Every two-digit number is made up of tens and ones. The "tens" tell us how many groups of ten we have, and the "ones" tell us how many extra single blocks we have. Together, they make the whole number!

How to Read Place Value

1️⃣ Look at the tens place first - each digit here means 10 blocks

2️⃣ Then look at the ones place - these are single blocks

3️⃣ Add them together to make the whole number

Let's Practice Together!

Example 1: Building Numbers

How many tens and ones are in the number 27?

Tens: 0

Ones: 0

Example 2: Guess the Number

I have tens and ones.

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Use everyday objects: Count groups of 10 items (like crayons or buttons) to show tens, then add extra ones.
  • Play place value games: Write a 2-digit number and have your child draw tens sticks and ones dots to represent it.
  • Make it physical: Use building blocks - 10 blocks connected make a "ten rod" and single blocks are "ones".
