What is Regrouping?
Regrouping is like trading coins!
Just like you can trade 10 pennies for 1 dime, in math we can trade 10 ones for 1 ten. This helps us when we have too many ones (more than 9) and need to make a new group of ten.
How to Regroup
1️⃣ Count your ones. If you have 10 or more, you can regroup!
2️⃣ Trade 10 ones for 1 ten block
3️⃣ Write how many tens and ones you have left
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Trading Ones for Tens
Look at these blocks! How many tens and ones do we have?
10
10
Count: 2 tens + 12 ones
Can we regroup some ones into tens?
Example 2: Cookie Jar Game
Imagine you have 24 cookies. Each box holds 10 cookies. How many full boxes can you make?
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use real objects: Practice with coins (pennies and dimes) or small toys to make regrouping concrete.
- Draw it out: Have your child draw tens as long rectangles and ones as small squares to visualize the process.
- Make it a game: Create a "trading post" where your child can exchange groups of 10 small items for 1 special item.
