Understanding Math Words
Math is like a special language with its own words!
When we do math problems, we use special terms to describe the numbers and what we're doing with them.
Learning these words will help you become a math superstar!
Addition Terms
When we add numbers together:
1️⃣ The numbers you add are called addends
2️⃣ The answer is called the sum
3️⃣ The plus sign (+) tells us to add
Subtraction Terms
When we subtract numbers:
1️⃣ The first number is the minuend
2️⃣ The number we take away is the subtrahend
3️⃣ The answer is called the difference
Multiplication Terms
When we multiply numbers:
1️⃣ The numbers we multiply are called factors
2️⃣ The answer is called the product
3️⃣ The times sign (×) tells us to multiply
Division Terms
When we divide numbers:
1️⃣ The number being divided is the dividend
2️⃣ The number we divide by is the divisor
3️⃣ The answer is called the quotient
Let's Practice!
Example 1: Addition Adventure
In the problem: 5 + 3 = 8
The addends are 5 and 3! The sum is 8.
Example 2: Division Discovery
In the problem: 12 ÷ 4 = 3
The dividend is 12, the divisor is 4, and the quotient is 3!
Parent Tips 🌟
- Make it a game: Create flashcards with math terms and have your child match them to the correct parts of problems.
- Use real-life examples: When sharing snacks or toys, use the math terms ("If we divide these 12 grapes among 3 people, what's the quotient?").
- Create a math word wall: Display these terms with colorful drawings to help reinforce the vocabulary.
