Understanding Inequalities
Inequalities are like balance scales!
Just like a seesaw, inequalities show us when one side is heavier (greater) or lighter (less) than the
other. We use special symbols: > (greater than),
<< /strong> (less than), and = (equal to).
Solving with Addition and Subtraction
1️⃣ Keep it balanced: What you do to one side, do to the other
2️⃣ Use shortcuts: Move numbers across the inequality sign by changing their sign
3️⃣ Check your answer: Plug numbers back in to see if they work!
Fun Examples to Try
Example 1: The Hungry Alligator
The alligator wants to eat the bigger number! Solve: x + 3 > 7
Subtract 3 from both sides: x + 3 - 3 > 7 - 3
This gives us: x > 4
The alligator wants numbers bigger than 4!
Example 2: Balloon Race
Which balloon will fly higher? Solve: y - 2 ≤ 5
Add 2 to both sides: y - 2 + 2 ≤ 5 + 2
This gives us: y ≤ 7
The balloon will fly up to 7 but not higher!
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use real-life examples: Compare plates of cookies or piles of toys to make inequalities tangible.
- Draw the symbols as alligators: The open mouth always faces the bigger quantity.
- Practice with number lines: Help your child visualize solutions by marking ranges on a number line.
