What is Subtraction?
Subtraction means taking away!
When we subtract, we find out how many are left after removing some from a group. It's like when you share your cookies with a friend - you have fewer cookies left!
How to Subtract
1️⃣ Start with the bigger number (minuend)
2️⃣ Take away the smaller number (subtrahend)
3️⃣ Count what's left (difference)
Let's Practice Together!
Apple Subtraction
You have 7 apples. You eat 2 apples. How many are left?
7 - 2 = 5 apples left!
Great job! You had 7 and took away 2, so 5 are left!
Doggy Bones
Rover has 9 bones. He buries 4 bones in the yard. How many bones does he still have?
9 - 4 = 5 bones left!
Awesome! 9 take away 4 equals 5. Rover still has 5 bones to chew!
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use real objects: Have your child practice with small toys, snacks, or coins to make subtraction tangible.
- Make it a game: Play "store" where your child uses subtraction to give correct change with play money.
- Daily practice: Look for subtraction opportunities in daily life ("We had 6 bananas, ate 2, how many left?").
