Subtraction Equations

Taking away numbers to find what's left!

What Are Subtraction Equations?

Subtraction is like sharing cookies with friends!
When you have some cookies and give some away, subtraction helps you know how many you have left. In math, we write subtraction problems with a minus sign (-) and an equals sign (=).

How to Solve Subtraction Equations

1️⃣ Look at the first number - this is how many you start with

2️⃣ Subtract the second number - this is how many you're taking away

3️⃣ Find the difference - this is how many are left!

Let's Practice Together!

Example 1: Cookie Subtraction

Emma has 8 cookies. She gives 3 cookies to her brother. How many cookies does Emma have left?

Equation: 8 - 3 = ?

8 - 3 = 5! Emma has 5 cookies left.

Example 2: Balloon Subtraction

There are 12 balloons at the party. 4 balloons pop. How many balloons are still floating?

Equation: 12 - 4 = ?

12 - 4 = 8! There are 8 balloons still floating.
