Learn how to turn word problems into subtraction equations!

What is a Subtraction Sentence?

A subtraction sentence shows how we take away one number from another.
It has three parts: the starting number (minuend), the number we take away (subtrahend), and the difference (answer). We write it like this: 12 - 5 = 7

How to Write a Subtraction Sentence

1️⃣ Find the starting number (how many you begin with)

2️⃣ Find how many are being taken away

3️⃣ Write the numbers with a minus (-) and equals (=) sign

Let's Practice Together!

Example 1: Apple Subtraction

Emma has 15 apples. She gives 6 apples to her friend. How many apples does Emma have left?

Drag the correct numbers and symbols to make the subtraction sentence:

15 - 6 = 9 7

Example 2: Balloon Subtraction

There were 18 balloons at the party. 9 balloons popped. How many balloons are left?

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Use real objects: Have your child practice with toys or snacks - "If you have 12 grapes and eat 4, how many are left?"
  • Make it visual: Draw pictures or use fingers to help visualize the subtraction process.
  • Daily practice: Look for subtraction opportunities in daily life like counting down days until an event or items used from a pack.
