Subtracting Big Numbers
Hello math explorer!
Today we're going to practice subtracting three-digit numbers. Remember, just like with smaller numbers, we subtract ones from ones, tens from tens, and hundreds from hundreds. Sometimes we need to borrow, but don't worry - we'll take it step by step!
How to Subtract Three-Digit Numbers
1️⃣ Line them up - Write the numbers one above the other
2️⃣ Subtract right to left - Start with the ones place
3️⃣ Borrow if needed - If the top number is smaller, borrow from the next column
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: 542 - 318
Let's solve this step by step:
542 - 318 = 224
Example 2: 700 - 463
This one has some zeros - be careful!
700 - 463 = 237
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use real objects like blocks or coins to demonstrate borrowing - physically moving items between columns helps understanding.
- Make it a game - Create subtraction challenges with small rewards for correct answers to keep practice fun.
- Check work with addition - After solving a subtraction problem, add your answer to the smaller number to see if you get the original number.
