What is Two-Digit Subtraction?
Subtraction means taking away or finding the difference between
numbers.
When we subtract two-digit numbers, we work with numbers from 10 to 99. We subtract the ones place
first, then the tens place. Sometimes we need to "borrow" from the tens place when the top number is
smaller than the bottom number.
How to Subtract Two-Digit Numbers
1️⃣ Line up the numbers by their place values (tens and ones)
2️⃣ Subtract the ones place first (rightmost numbers)
3️⃣ Subtract the tens place next (leftmost numbers)
4️⃣ Borrow if needed when the top number is smaller
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: No Borrowing Needed
Let's solve: 56 - 23
- 2 3
_____
1. Subtract ones: 6 - 3 = 3
2. Subtract tens: 5 - 2 = 3
3. Final answer: 33
Example 2: With Borrowing
Let's solve: 72 - 48
- 4 8
_____
1. Can't subtract 8 from 2, so we borrow 1 from tens place
2. Now we have 12 (ones place) and 6 (tens place)
3. Subtract ones: 12 - 8 = 4
4. Subtract tens: 6 - 4 = 2
5. Final answer: 24
