Subtract Two-Digit Numbers with Regrouping

Learn how to borrow when subtracting bigger numbers!

What is Regrouping in Subtraction?

Sometimes when we subtract, the top number is smaller than the bottom number in one column.
When this happens, we need to "borrow" from the next column to the left. This is called regrouping! It's like when you need to borrow a pencil from your friend to finish your work.

How to Subtract with Regrouping

1️⃣ Look at the ones place - If the top number is smaller, we need to regroup

2️⃣ Borrow 1 from the tens place - This makes the ones place 10 bigger

3️⃣ Subtract each column - Now you can subtract both the ones and tens

Let's Practice Together!

Example 1: 52 - 27

1. Look at the ones: 2 - 7 → We need to regroup!

2. Borrow 1 from the tens place (5 becomes 4) and add 10 to the ones (2 becomes 12)

3. Now subtract: 12 - 7 = 5 (ones place) and 4 - 2 = 2 (tens place)

52 - 27 = 25 🎉 Great job!

Example 2: 63 - 48

1. Look at the ones: 3 - 8 → We need to regroup!

2. Borrow 1 from the tens place (6 becomes 5) and add 10 to the ones (3 becomes 13)

3. Now subtract: 13 - 8 = 5 (ones place) and 5 - 4 = 1 (tens place)

63 - 48 = 15 ✨ You're a subtraction superstar!

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Use real objects: Try using pennies (for ones) and dimes (for tens) to physically show regrouping by exchanging 1 dime for 10 pennies.
  • Make it a game: Create subtraction flashcards and reward correct answers with small prizes or stickers.
  • Highlight the pattern: Show how regrouping is just like when we "carried" in addition, but now we're "borrowing" instead.
