What is Subtraction?
Subtraction is like sharing or taking away!
When we subtract, we start with a bigger number and take away some to find out what's left. It's like when you have 5 cookies and eat 2, you have 3 left! That's 5 - 2 = 3.
How to Make Numbers with Subtraction
1️⃣ Start with a bigger number (like 10)
2️⃣ Think of numbers to take away (like 3)
3️⃣ Find what's left (10 - 3 = 7)
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Cookie Sharing
Emma has 8 cookies. She wants to share some with her friend. How many can she keep if she gives away:
8 - =
Try different numbers (1-7) to see all the ways Emma can share her cookies!
Example 2: Toy Box Challenge
There are 12 toys in the box. Some get taken out to play. How many are left if we take out:
12 - = ?
Can you find all the subtraction facts that make numbers from 1 to 11?
Parent Tips 🌟
- Use real objects: Practice with toys, snacks, or coins to make subtraction visual and tangible.
- Play subtraction games: Try "how many are hiding?" by covering some objects and asking your child to figure out how many are hidden.
- Make it a daily habit: Ask subtraction questions throughout the day ("If we had 6 bananas and ate 2, how many are left?").
