What Are Subtraction Sentences?
Subtraction sentences tell us how many items are taken away from a group.
When we look at pictures, we can count how many items there were at first, how many were taken away, and how many are left. Then we can write this as a subtraction problem!
How to Write Subtraction Sentences from Pictures
1️⃣ Count all the items you start with
2️⃣ Count how many items are taken away or crossed out

Parent Tips 🌟
- Use real objects: Practice with toys, snacks, or household items. "We had 12 grapes, you ate 4, how many are left?" makes learning tangible.
- Make it a game: Create picture cards with different amounts crossed out and take turns writing subtraction sentences.
- Connect to daily life: Point out subtraction situations like cookies disappearing from the jar or toys being put away.
