Solving puzzles with letters and numbers!

What is Algebra?

Algebra is like a secret code where letters stand for numbers!
We use letters (called variables) like x or y to represent numbers we don't know yet. Our job is to solve the puzzle and find out what number the letter stands for!

Solving Simple Equations

1️⃣ Identify the variable (the letter)

2️⃣ Do the opposite operation to both sides

3️⃣ Simplify until you find the answer!

Let's Try Some Examples!

Example 1: The Cookie Jar Mystery

If x + 3 = 7, how many cookies were in the jar before you ate 3?

We know x + 3 = 7

Subtract 3 from both sides: x + 3 - 3 = 7 - 3

So x = 4! There were 4 cookies in the jar!

Example 2: Sharing Pencils

If 5 × y = 20, how many pencils does each friend get if you share 20 pencils equally among 5 friends?

We know 5 × y = 20

Divide both sides by 5: (5 × y) ÷ 5 = 20 ÷ 5

So y = 4! Each friend gets 4 pencils!

Parent Tips 🌟

  • Make it real: Use everyday situations like sharing snacks or counting toys to practice algebra concepts.
  • Play detective: Frame algebra problems as mysteries to solve - "If we had some apples and ate 2, now we have 5. How many did we start with?"
  • Use manipulatives: Small objects like blocks or coins can help visualize equations before writing them down.
